Walid Raad at Camp X

U-TURN Quadrennial for Contemporary Art in collaboration with Camp X presents two performance-lectures where the Lebanese media artist Walid Raad respond to his country's war history.

Friday November 7, 5pm

The Loudest Muttering Is Over: Case Studies from The Atlas Group Archive is a performance lecture, which collects examples from The Atlas Group Archive. This archive is a fictional organisation whose main purpose is to research and document Lebanese contemporary history with a special focus on the Lebanese wars from 1975 to 1991. Through out the years the organisation has found and created several documents: films, videos, photographies, notebooks and other objects. Walid Raad uses the documents from the archive in his performance-lectures. Therefore this performance-lecture is a good way to get an introduction to Walid Raad's works i general.

Saturday November 8, 8pm
My Neck Is Thinner Than a Hair is a part of the continuous investigation in The Atlas Group Archive. This is a multi-media/performance-lecture about the use of the more than 3.600 car bombs, detonated under the Lebanese wars from 1975 to 1991. More specifically Walid Raad investigates the events, experiences, objects and effects surrounding a car explosion that took place in Beirut on January 21 1986. After the performance-lecture there will be an informal conversation with the audience.

Place: Teater Camp X Aveny, Frederiksberg Allé 102, 1820 Frederiksberg C

Price: DKK 165, youth ticket DKK 90, Reumert tickets (4 young people under 25): DKK 60. Booking 7020 1031 / www.billetnet.dk

Films from the Balázs Béla Studio (BBS)

Miklós ERDÉLY: Version, 1981, 54'
Director of Photography: András Mész
The film, which was made in 1979 (and standardised in 1981), is a free interpretation of Krúdy Gyula's documentary novel entitled Eszter Solymosi of Tiszaeszlár (1931). The film seeks to explore what means the authorities may have employed towards convincing an overly sensitive and timid child - the son of the Rabbi of Tiszaeszlár - to give testament against the people of his own faith and how the fake confession becomes blurred with real memories through intensified fantasy.

The Screening takes about 54min. and will be introduced by Lívia Páldi

Time: 5pm Thursday October 30
Place: Tap E Gamle Carlsberg Vej 15, 2500 Valby
Price: The event is free with a U-TURN bracelet, otherwise the entrance fee is DKK 60/40

The Balázs Béla Studio (BBS) was founded in Budapest 1961 by the Hungarian Film Academy's graduating class of 1961, the so-called "golden generation" of Hungarian filmmakers that included Pál Gábor, Sándor Sára, and István Szabó.

BBS was conceived as a workshop for young professionals to make an entrée into film production, but later it attracted a wide range of artists, writers, and musicians from the city's lively underground scene. Early productions by these young professional filmmakers show influences from the Nouvelle Vague and Cinéma Vérité, with a strong feel for documentary. The documentary movement, known as the Budapest School, mixed fiction with social documentary and was also formed within the BBS with the participation of filmmakers like the internationally acclaimed Béla Tarr.

This screening is part of Opening Hours and is organised in collaboration with Műcsarnok Kunsthalle in Budapest. The films were selected by Lívia Páldi (curator, writer), Miklós Erhardt (artist, writer) and Sebestyén Kodolányi (filmmaker, managing director of the BBS Foundation).

IDEA arts+society is an independent magazine published by IDEA Design & Print and IDEA Foundation in Cluj, Romania. The magazine situates itself at the self-reflective crossroad between two axes of meaning. The first of these axes runs, thematically, from arts to politics, while the second is defined by the performative effects resulted from the gap between text and image (as heterogeneous media/ realms of discourse).

The panel is a part of OPENING HOURS, a co-operation project between five European partners: KW Institute for Contemporary Art / berlin biennial for contemporary art (Berlin), IDEA art + society (Cluj-Napoca), Lunds Konsthall (Lund), Műcsarnok / Kunsthalle Budapest (Budapest) and U-TURN Quadrennial for Contemporary Art (Copenhagen).

BEFORE AND AFTER: Sergei Eisenstein and Kira Muratova

Saturday October 18
2.00 pm The General Line, 1928 by Sergej Eisenstein (121 min)

Sunday October 19
2.00 pm The Asthenic Syndrome, 1989 by Kira Muratova (153 min)

Both films will be shown at Carlberg Tap E and introduced by curator Anders Kreuger from Lunds Konsthall

Two Russian films, made by very different authors with very different methods. They form a diptych portrait of the Soviet mind, 'before and after' the promised Communist future that was to be achieved through political control of all aspects of life.

The General Line from 1928 by Sergei Eisenstein (1898-1948)
has been called a 'linear' and 'tonal' film. It is a fairytale of collective will and technical progress at a stage when the collective and state farms were still a 'voluntary' option for Russia's majority population, the peasants. Just a couple of years later, Stalin's forced collectivisation of agriculture would lead to the starvation and deportation of tens of millions of people.

The Asthenic Syndrome from 1989 by Kira Muratova (born 1934)
has been hailed as the greatest film of the perestroika ('reconstruction') years that concluded the Soviet experiment. Eisenstein's carefully engineered narratives have imploded, and Muratova's characters are adrift in the bleak and coarse reality of decaying real socialism, redeemed only by her mastery of visual phrasing and her devastatingly precise use of theatrical detail.

The screenings are a part of Opening Hours and are organised in collaboration with Lund Konsthall in Sweden in relation to the current exhibition After Eisenstein, which runs at Lunds Konsthall until November 2, 2008.

Visionary city planning - Legobattle at Rådhuspladsen

U-TURN Quadrennial for Contemporary Art has invited the three Danish architect studios BIG, EFFEKT and POLYFORM to battle in new and exciting city planning ideas for the city of Copenhagen. The battle is with LEGO bricks and is an event arranged in relation to Olafur Eliasson's interactive artwork The collectivity project at Rådhuspladsen - an urban planning experiment that encourages everyone to join in the construction of a micro-Copenhagen.

The event takes place on Friday October 17 from 12-4pm at Rådhuspladsen

The collectivity project by Olafur Eliasson is exhibited at Rådhuspladsen (The City Hall Square) in Copenhagen from 11 - 19 October 2008.

Narkevičius and Watkins

The Lithuanian artist Deimantas Narkevičius (1964), just as the British documentary film-maker Peter Watkins (1935) work with the relationship between objective truth and interpretive constructs, particularly when it comes to describing historical events. On Thursday October 16 Cinemateket screens Narkevičius film The Role of a Lifetime, as well as Forgotten Faces by Peter Watkins. Deimantas Narkevičius will make a short introduction the films and talk about how his work is influenced by Watkins.
Later the same evening Cinemateket also screens Peter Watkins film portrait of the artist Edward Munch.

Invitation: come and help build Copenhagen again!

Olafur Eliasson's work, The collectivity project opens at Rådhuspladsen (The City Hall Square) at 4.00pm on Saturday October 11.

The Danish-Icelandic artist's contribution to U-TURN - Copenhagen's festival for contemporary art, is an urban planning experiment that encourages everyone to join the construction of a micro-Copenhagen.

Thousands of white LEGO bricks - potential buildings - will be piled on a tables shaped after an aerial view of Copenhagen.
The visitors can move freely between the tables, which each represent one of Copenhagen's various neighbourhoods, and are free to contribute with visionary, humorous or completely unrealistic proposals - come re-build the city of Copenhagen at the city's most central location!

The Collectivity Project will be displayed at Rådhuspladsen (The City Hall Square) in Copenhagen from 11 - 19 October 2008. Olafur Eliasson will be present at the opening at 4.00pm Saturday October 11.

DEBAT!

RYKKET! Talk and walk

Vesterbros nyere historie belyst gennem kunstværker i gadehøjde.

The Innocents - performancestykke af Dora García

Derfor hedder Dora Garcías performance The Innocents.

Sted: Carlsberg Tap E, Gamle Carlsberg Vej 11, 2500 Valby

SUPERMELLE - alene inde i kassen

Talk with Joachim Koester

Hypnagogia, the Secret Garden of Sleep - Confessions of an Occasional Trespasser
Thursday September 11 at 8pm, In the exhibition, Carlsberg Tap E

Hypnagogia is defined as the state between wakefulness and sleep or, put differently: dreaming while awake. One theory on this altered state is that when the frontal cortex (associated with logical thought and the perception of a well-defined "external" world) is inhibited through sleep, deep relaxation, or trance and a minimum cortical arousal is maintained, it is possible to experience and observe the consciousness of other parts of the brain. Although the hypnagogic state is commonly associated with the esoteric terminology of astral travel and the out-of-body experience, it is revealing to view it as a model or threshold where repressed ghostly matter, imaginary topographies, and other ideas become physical as they seep into culture.

In his lecture, Joachim Koester will touch upon this and other ideas from the (secret) history of consciousness as well as sketch out various entries into the ever elusive "astral" or subtle, realms.

During an extended stay in Copenhagen Ján Mančuška crafted a theatre performance which, as its title, Reverse Play, indicates, is a drama performed in reverse.

Reverse Play is a performance that takes place in a theatre (hence the term 'theatre performance'), in which actors and dancers perform the piece back to front while another actor, seated in the front row among the audience, narrates the storyline in sequence. On stage, everything runs counter to narrative logic, even breathing and walking. Further, despite the fact that in the play's progression cause and effect are reversed, there is perfect congruence between the actions performed on stage and the incidents in the narrative. All the sound comes from the narrator, while the play itself is performed in silence, with concentration focused upon the bodily movements performed in reverse.

As the play progresses, it becomes increasingly apparent that the action on stage
and the narrator's story are out of sync. One of the points at which the key thrust of the play comes through is at the crucial moment where the narrator is recounting an episode involving a thief pickpocketing a wallet, and a character on stage is seen slipping a wallet into someone else's pocket. Mančuška's interest is in the ways in which stories are told, here using forward and backward-moving narratives to disentangle the essence of - and perhaps also the contingencies surrounding - ethically charged situations.

Whether the genre be installation, film or performance, Mančuška's artistic themes invariably have an existential thrust. Typically, they focus around an individual faced with an ethical choice, in the context of a labyrinthine storyline presenting multiple possible plot developments and avenues of interpretation. It is in particular the individual's dilemmas, complicated by a range of contingencies, that combine to create the tragicomic universe that defines Ján Mančuška's art.

New Issue of Chto Delat Confiscated and Under Investigation

PETERSBURG, August 29, 2008. On the evening of August 27, the new issue of the newspaper Chto Delat (No. 19: What Does It Mean to Lose? The Experience of Perestroika) was confiscated during a police raid at the printers in Petersburg.
The raid on the printer's workshop was connected to an earlier incident, when a Petersburg activist was arrested by Petersburg police at the gates of the Petersburg sea port for handing out a flyer to workers. The flyer aroused suspicion because it contained material critical of the Russian-Georgian conflict, and the police raided the printer's workshop at which the flyer had been produced, where they discovered the most recent edition of Chto Delat. They confiscated the entire edition of 3,000 newspapers and detained Chto Delat editor Dmitry Vilensky for questioning.
"The situation really did look pretty absurd," says Vilensky. "We produced this issue for the U-TURN Quadrennial in Copenhagen, and it's one of the most artsy issues we've made so far; it contains almost no references to the current political situation." Instead, the issue is dedicated to the problematic of perestroika, whose hopes and outcome the authors subject to critical enquiry. The security officials' suspicion was aroused by the "political look" of the paper and, in particular, by the libretto of a film-opera by the Chto Delat work group, to be premiered at U-TURN later next week, in which a nationalist, a democrat, a revolutionary, and a businessman debate the fate of the Soviet Union and its present outcome. The full text of the screenplay can be found here.
Yesterday, Vilensky was informed by the Petersburg police that the case had been handed over to the Kirov district attorney's office to investigate whether the newspaper is in violation of the Russian constitution, which contains paragraphs against extremism and the incitement of ethnic and religious hatred. "The militia - who told me that they 'didn't want blood' - were quite surprised by this move," Vilensky says. "They told me that the signal came from the FSB official who was coordinating the raid on the printers." The entire edition is still in custody, and will not be distributed at U-TURN, where it was meant to be part of a video-installation.
The printer's workshop Polyarnaya Zvezda [Pole Star] has since been cordoned off as a crime scene, and all its employees questioned. It was one of the only remaining places in Petersburg to print opposition leaflets of a wide range, including the Petersburg issue of National Bolshevik organ Limonka. Its closure - and the seizure of what is perhaps Chto Delat's most politically innocent issue - is symptomatic of the new atmosphere of suspicion and fear that has arisen in Russia.

Mads Lynnerup - Perfomance at Karriere

Tuesday August 12 the artist Mads Lynnerup will perform the piece Ur (watch) at Karriere. During the Bar's opening hours the artist will register time passing, by using a hand-held sign with numbers, which change every minute.
By acting as a "live watch" Lynnerup makes time into an absurd action, an existential everyday drama.

Is this Christiania?

"HEJ! HEJ HEJ! VIL I HAVE EN KOP KAFFE? HEEJ!

NEW U-TURN VIDEOS!

Watch Köken Erguns film TANKLOVE in the making. The filming takes place in the small provincial town Jyderup on Western Sealand. The film is produced in collaboration with S.A.I.R, the National Defence, a tank collector, a lot of volunteers and a local environment which support the project. TANKLOVE can be seen at U-TURN from 5. of September.

Video by: Anders Kongshaug, vnr.tv

A film about the artist group Parfyme. The group focus on practical research, activities and 'immediate' actions. They see art as a tool that can be used for many things: as an "excuse" for personal contributions to our surroundings, a way to communicate serious issues, simple fun and good deeds!
At U-TURN Parfyme is contributing with Harbour Laboratory, a project that will
test new uses of the harbour and hopefully bring some fresh perspective to the harbour situation in Copenhagen.

A turning point nationally and locally?
On 26 July, U-TURN opens with the exhibition satellite Food for Thought in the bare halls of the disused sugar factory in Stege on the island of Møn. U-Turn thus opens up completely new perspectives for international contemporary art in Denmark - and casts a new light over the historic role of Møn.

Talk with Köken Ergun at Karriere Bar

U-TURN and Karriere Bar have initiated a collaboration, hosting a number of talks and performances during the Quadrennial. Over the summer we will present a number of artists who will be in Denmark preparing for U-TURN in September.

First talk will be with the Turkish artist Köken Ergun, who has been in Denmark since April on an artist residency at S.A.I.R to produce his new film, TANKLOVE.

Köken Ergun will talk about how his project TANKLOVE is realised with the help of volunteers, S.A.I.R, the National Defence, a tank collector and a local environment which support the project. TANKLOVE is filmed in Jyderup, West Sealand in the beginning of July where the relaxed provincial atmosphere for a moment is interrupted by a tank and an unexpected sympathy between the the military vehicle and the citizens occur.
Moreover, two of the artists older films will screened.

Time and place: Sunday 22 June, 4pm at Karriere Bar, Flæsketorvet 57-67, Copenhagen.

Roi Vaara performs at bb5

Below the Surface a performance by Roi Vaara (FI)

As part of the collaborative project Opening Hours U-TURN Quadrennial and the 5th berlin biennial (bb5) presents a 2 1/2 hour performance by Roi Vaara, who is known worldwide for his humoristic and existential performances. Spectators are free to come and go during the performance.

In Below the Surface the blindfolded performer washes white T-shirts in water, which colours them red. He hangs them to dry on clotheshorses. The dripping water colours the floor. A special live reading, which consists of lists of words collected by the artist since 2001, will accompany the performance. After the performer has filled all the clotheshorses with the coloured T-shirts he turns on the lights. This performance can be viewed as a comment on history already written in the 21st century.

Attention former 'Next stoppers'!

Photo: The Russian art collective Chto delat? (What is to be done?)

The Russian artist group Chto delat? (What is to be done?) and U-TURN look for former participants in the Danish initiative in 1988/89 'Next-Stop Sovjet': the project starts now!

Chto delat? will be in Copenhagen in October and November 2007 on an AIR residency, during their stay they will produce a publication, as well as a number of new video works, including a film re-enactment of situations related to the Next Stop experience in 1989.
All the projects will take their point of departure in the 'Next-Stop Sovjet' movement and its relation to the Soviet time of 'Perestroika'.
Members of Chto delat? were themselves involved in 'Next-Stop Sovjet' as hosts for the Danish visitors and they experienced the impact this initiative had on the then Soviet (underground) culture.

How can you participate?
As part of Chto delat's? project in Copenhagen they will co-operate with The Royal Danish Art Academy where they will do a series of workshops and lectures with the students. For these events Chto delat? wish to invite former 'Next-Stoppers' to participate with their experiences and to discuss these (with the students and Chto delat?) in relation to current Danish/European/global cultural, artistic and political debate.

Likewise Chto delat? wish to invite former 'Next-Stoppers' to participate in the project in one or more of the following ways:

  • by answering 10 questions about their experiences (that will be send electronically)
  • function as an actor or extra in the video productions
  • contribute to the publication
The finished work will be presented at U-TURN, Quadrennial for Contemporary Art in September 2008.

Chto delat? and U-TURN look forward to your hearing from you!

To participate please contact Helga Christoffersen before 1 October 2007. Participants are also welcome to join during the project.
