Havnelaboratoriet (The Harbour Laboratory) is the name of a project in Copenhagen harbour which the artists' group Parfyme has been engaged on since May 2008. From the project's start, Parfyme has had a permanent base on the former Bryghusgrund (the Brewery Site) on Christians Brygge, one of the capital's arterial roads. Havnelaboratoriet is the platform for an artistic project that is constantly shifting and morphing. Visitors have been able to soak up jazz, be a sea scout for a day and meet the harbour residents over a communal supper and around a campfire.
In the run-up to the opening of the U-TURN exhibition, Parfyme worked on a number of major installations which are currently on display on the Bryghusgrund and around the harbour. Parfyme has a programme of events running throughout the exhibition period featuring workshops, talks and concerts - thereby opening up the opportunity for visitors to help shape the habour laboratory and contribute to a dialogue about the role of Copenhagen's harbour, as both amenity space and resource.
Parfyme aims to make visible a whole string of unused or overlooked potentials hidden away in the harbour area. How many are familiar with, say, the short cut along the water? Or know where you can launch your water cycle? Or what a landlubber thinks of lobscouse? Havnelaboratoriet is not a proposal for a new and alternative plan for the harbour, but an exploration of its potentials. As Parfyme puts it: "The harbour is for all."
Parfyme's projects tend to be set in the public realm. Typically involving local residents, passers-by, or others, their activities are focused towards an artistic process that is continually evolving. Suggestion boxes have been set up that are emptied weekly, and Parfyme is swift to implement the incoming ideas.
It is precisely the unpredictable element in social encounters between people from across the spectrum that interests Parfyme. What happens when a harbour policeman and an artist cross paths, and how might their interaction impact on life in the harbour? With works that are often streaked with humour, Parfyme wants to introduce us to new ways of interacting with others and interfacing with the public realm. - HJC
