OPENING HOURS
OPENING HOURS is a co-operation project between five European partners: KW
Institute for Contemporary Art / berlin biennial for contemporary art (Berlin), IDEA art + society (Cluj-Napoca), Lunds Konsthall (Lund), Műcsarnok / Kunsthalle Budapest (Budapest) and U-TURN Quadrennial for Contemporary Art (Copenhagen).
The basic idea is to challenge the standard notion of presenting art within institutional opening hours by developing time-based programmes featuring extracts of the work of each partner/curator, hosted by the partner institutions. While most partners present work related to performative practices, research and experimental film, a theoretical reflection on a specific topic is organised through one partner IDEA, which offers a magazine space rather than an exhibition space. All partners share an interest in breaking with conventional exhibition formats, and in relating contemporary artistic practice and cultural understanding with artistic achievements from a recent past, in order to understand our common and divers artistic background across the divide of
the cold war.
In practice, the programme unfolds in a period marked by the opening of the 5th berlin biennial for contemporary art (5 April - 15 June 2008), continues with programmes taking place at Műcsarnok in Budapest, Lunds Konsthall in Lund and concludes with a magazine launch and a series of programmes from all partners in Copenhagen during U-TURN Quadrennial for Contemporary Art (5 September - 9 November 2008). Each programme will be curated by the respective partner institutions and realised with support from the hosting institution. The purpose is to establish collaboration across national and institutional borders, bridging former separations and emphasising Europe in its current form in order to
share knowledge, experience, and ongoing projects. Hence, the aim is to use this new outlook to gain new insight and to use the differences as inspiration and input for both creative and institutional development.
OPENING HOURS builds on an initiative by U-TURN Quadrennial for Contemporary Art, and the concept reflects current research and a general wish to establish a European network. The concept has been developed through twelve months of dialogue among the partners.
